CARROLL COUNTY, Iowa— Authorities are investigating a deadly tractor accident that claimed two lives and critically injured another on April 14.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office reported the accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of 220th Street and Hawthorne Avenue. A tractor traveling east failed to obey a stop sign and struck the driver’s side of a northbound car.
Investigators identified Elvin Murillo Castro, a 17-year-old Carroll resident, as the driver of the car involved in the accident. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene along with another passenger. The car’s front-seat passenger, a 24-year-old Carroll man, sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Des Moines.
Authorities later arrested the tractor driver, a 51-year-old Carroll man, at his residence for leaving the scene of the accident.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate.
