EDEN, N.C.— A City of Eden dump truck caused multiple fatalities in a pedestrian accident at Carroll and Church streets on April 24.
The accident occurred around 1:23 p.m. when the driver of a dump truck failed to stop at a stop sign. It struck six pedestrians working on powerlines for Carolina Power and Signalization. The vehicle continued, hitting an occupied bucket truck before leaving the road and crashing into a ditch.
Police identified Matthew Lockwood, 30, of Winston-Salem, as one of four pedestrians who died at the scene. Two other workers sustained life-threatening injuries and were airlifted to hospitals for treatment.
The bucket truck occupant suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators charged the driver with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and a stop sign violation.
