MOFFETT, Texas— Authorities are investigating an April 23 accident involving a Chevrolet pickup truck that caused a fatality after driving through a residence in the Moffett area.
The accident occurred when the truck struck a tree and smashed into a home. Emergency responders found a 70-year-old man from Angelina County deceased inside the house after being hit by the vehicle.
Deputies located the damaged truck three miles away, covered by a tarp. Investigators discovered debris from the house and mail belonging to the victim near the truck. Surveillance footage captured Jorge Lopez, the suspected driver, at a nearby convenience store just minutes before the accident.
Authorities later identified Lopez as the individual responsible for the truck. Officers found him hiding under a bed at a different location. He initially resisted arrest but was ultimately taken into custody by deputies.
Lopez is currently being held in Angelina County Jail on charges related to the accident, including failure to remain at the scene after causing the death of a person. Officers noted that Lopez had previously been deported, and his immigration status is now under review by authorities.
The Angelina County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this tragic incident.
