On Monday night, a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 40 came to an end near Garner after the driver of a black Dodge Charger crashed into a pickup truck, causing injuries to two individuals.
The incident was reported by North Carolina State Highway Patrol around 8:45 p.m. when a trooper observed the Charger traveling at 90 mph in a 65 mph zone near Lake Wheeler Road.
The driver then proceeded to accelerate and weave through traffic, reaching speeds of up to 150 mph during the approximately 10-minute chase. As he approached the U.S. 70 exit at mile marker 306, the driver collided with a pickup truck.
Both injured parties were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The suspect, identified as Donovan Curtis age 19, of Raleigh, was arrested and charged with multiple offenses including possession of a stolen vehicle, felony flee to elude arrest, felony possession of marijuana, carrying a concealed gun, aggressive driving, and cruelty to animals – after causing harm to a small dog.
Curtis himself did not sustain any injuries in the crash.
The two victims are expected to recover from their non-life-threatening injuries.
Currently detained without bond at Wake County Jail, Curtis will face legal consequences for his actions.
CRASH INVESTIGATION
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding motorists cause approximately 16.7 percent of fatal accidents. Excessive speed also increases the likelihood of someone being seriously injured or killed in the wreck.
“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors considered and examined,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.
“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help piece together what happened. All of these resources are necessary for helping clients receive monetary compensation for damages or a loss following a collision,” said Bond.
PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM
A victim may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim pending an investigation.
Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, said, “Injured victims involved in a collision often seek a personal injury claim to cover the cost of medical bills, future medical care, loss of income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering.
“Insurance companies can be notoriously unconcerned with the mounting costs an injured party may accrue. An attorney can help. We protect the victims of these tragedies daily, forcing the insurance companies to pay for their mistakes,” he added.
