WILMINGTON, N.C.— A hit-and-run accident involving an e-bike and a car early on April 12 resulted in one fatality.
Officers responded to reports of an accident on Wrightsville Avenue at 12:15 a.m. Police discovered that the driver of the car fled the scene before their arrival. The bicyclist suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital.
Authorities identified 57-year-old John William as the victim. Emergency responders confirmed his death at the hospital on April 13.
Police arrested the driver, a 68-year-old Burgaw man, and initially charged him with DWI-Serious Injury and Felony Hit and Run. Additional charges of 2nd Degree Murder were later added.
The Wilmington Police Department continues to investigate.

2049 people were killed by hit-and-run crashes in 2016 — a 62 percent increase from 2009, the last year in which a downward trend was recorded. AAA said the data makes 2016 the deadliest year since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began compiling statistics on fatal motor vehicle crashes in 1975.
