AMARILLO— Julia Grubb, age 58, of Fountain Hills, Arizona, died Saturday night after a vehicle crash on Interstate 40 in Amarillo.
Amarillo police reported the incident occurred near Western Street when the driver of a Toyota Tundra pulling a trailer lost control. The Tundra struck the back of a BMW, which hit the center divider before stopping in the median.
After the impact, the Tundra crossed the median and collided with a Rudy’s BBQ sign. Grubb, a passenger in the Tundra, sustained fatal injuries. Emergency responders transported the driver to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police confirmed speed was a factor in the wreck.
The investigation is ongoing, according to the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, there were 33,654 fatal motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2018 in which 36,560 deaths occurred. This resulted in 11.2 deaths per 100,000 people and 1.13 deaths per 100 million miles traveled.
