KERSHAW COUNTY— Maria Manzano, 26, lost her life on March 28 in a two-vehicle crash north of Elgin, South Carolina.
South Carolina Highway Patrol reported the accident occurred just before 2 p.m. at Smyrna Road and Wildwood Lane. Authorities said Manzano was driving a 2014 Toyota sedan north on Smyrna Road when a 2024 Nissan sedan struck her vehicle while heading west on Wildwood Lane.
Emergency responders transported Manzano and the Nissan driver to the hospital, where Manzano succumbed to her injuries. The other driver was airlifted to a Columbia hospital. No other passengers were involved.
South Carolina Highway Patrol continues investigating the incident.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, there were 33,654 fatal motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2018 in which 36,560 deaths occurred. This resulted in 11.2 deaths per 100,000 people and 1.13 deaths per 100 million miles traveled.
