EDEN, N.C.— Authorities are investigating an April 24 accident involving a City of Eden dump truck that left multiple fatalities and injuries.
The accident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. at Carroll and Church streets. A dump truck traveling north failed to stop at a stop sign before entering the intersection. The vehicle struck six pedestrians working on powerlines for Carolina Power and Signalization. It continued forward, hitting a bucket truck before leaving the road and crashing into a ditch.
Officials identified Kevin Alexander, 34, as one of the injured pedestrians. He is reported to be in stable condition. Cody Rich, 31, an occupant of the bucket truck, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Four pedestrians died at the scene, and two others were critically injured and flown to nearby hospitals. The dump truck driver, a 66-year-old man from Eden, suffered minor injuries and has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and a stop sign violation.
The NC State Highway Patrol and Eden Police Department continue to investigate.
