The accident occurred at approximately 1:23 p.m. at the intersection of Carroll Street and Church Street. A dump truck traveling north failed to stop at a stop sign and struck six pedestrians working on powerlines for Carolina Power and Signalization.
Police identified William Evans, 35, of Randleman, as one of the four pedestrians who died at the scene. Two other pedestrians sustained life-threatening injuries and were flown to hospitals for treatment.
The dump truck then collided with an occupied bucket truck before veering off the road into a ditch. The occupant of the bucket truck suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Eden Police Department and North Carolina State Highway Patrol provided these details. Investigators have charged the driver with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and a stop sign violation.
