SCHENECTADY— Zion Gamble, age 8, died on Mar. 18 after a vehicle struck him while walking with his older sister in Schenectady.
The accident happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Chrisler Avenue and Crane Street. Zion and his sister were crossing the road at a red light to go to a store when a vehicle hit him and fled the scene.
Emergency responders transported Zion to Ellis Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.
Officers located the vehicle later that night in the Woodlawn area. Police arrested a 31-year-old man and charged him with leaving the scene of an accident and operating a vehicle without insurance.
The Schenectady Police Department continues to investigate.

2049 people were killed by hit-and-run crashes in 2016 — a 62 percent increase from 2009, the last year in which a downward trend was recorded. AAA said the data makes 2016 the deadliest year since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began compiling statistics on fatal motor vehicle crashes in 1975.
